Bill Maher is pushing back against the corporate media narrative surrounding slain conservative leader Charlie Kirk, accusing left-leaning outlets of mischaracterizing what the Turning Point USA founder actually believed.

According to Breitbart, Maher used his Club Random podcast to defend Kirks character and to criticize the press for turning political opponents into caricatures rather than people. I liked him as a person, Maher said of Kirk. I do not think he was a monster. The HBO host revealed that Theyre doing a documentary [on Kirk], and they asked if I would be in it, adding, I said yes.

Maher explained that he agreed to participate, but only on honest terms, not as a cheerleader. And I told them, Dont expect me to be just saying, you know, hey geography about Charlie. I liked him as a person, he continued. The Real Time with Bill Maher host also disclosed that he is grateful he had the chance to speak with Kirk before the conservative activist was assassinated.

Im glad I talked to him. I do not think he was a monster, Maher said, underscoring that personal engagement cut through the medias demonization. He then blasted the mainstream media for mischaracterizing the Turning Point USA founders beliefs, a pattern conservatives have long accused the press of applying to right-of-center figures. If you look at his statements Ive read the full statements, of course, because everybody is only interested in getting points for their team they mischaracterized them, Maher asserted.

But even when I read the full statement, which were accurately characterized, I still disagreed with them. But it wasnt what they presented, he continued. Again, its always in the middle. It wasnt as bad as they said, but I still disagree. His guest, comedian Jeff Dunham, praised Mahers willingness to host a civil, substantive exchange with a high-profile conservative.

Comedian Jeff Dunham said he loved the Club Random interview with Kirk last year, noting that the two had a friendly conversation despite political differences. What I loved about the interview is that you sat there and considered things and listened to him, let him talk, and it was a really great discussion, Dunham said. Kirk was murdered roughly five months after his conversation with Maher, a fact that now lends a somber weight to that dialogue.

Everybodys a monster till you talk to them, Maher pointed out, before noting he has had similar experiences with other conservatives who have appeared on his shows. Anna Paulina Luna? Love her, he said. We had a great time. I talked to her after the show. I was like, If I had only known about you what Id read, I would have thought [you were] crazy. Youre not crazy!'

That is my single biggest issue with the left, Maher added. They wont talk to people. His remarks highlight a growing concern on the right that progressive elites and their media allies prefer to vilify conservativesfrom grassroots activists to figures like President Donald Trumprather than debate them, reinforcing echo chambers instead of the open discourse a free society requires.
