The National Republican Senatorial Committee has asked federal regulators to investigate what it calls a deceptive bid to confuse Alaska voters in a closely watched U.S. Senate race.
According to Just The News, the NRSC on Monday lodged a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission targeting Daniel J. Sullivan of Petersburg, Alaska, who filed to run in the Republican primary against incumbent GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan. The filing notes that Daniel J. Sullivan has no prior record of Republican registration and has previously backed Democrats, including Sen. Sullivans opponent, Democrat Mary Peltola.
The complaint further alleges that a press release from Daniel J. Sullivans campaign contained metadata showing it was authored by Amber Lee of Amber Lee Strategies, a consulting firm with an exclusively progressive client roster. It also contends that Daniel J. Sullivans campaign materials, including his logo and website, mimic Sen. Sullivans branding with similar colors, imagery, and fonts, a tactic Republicans say is designed to mislead conservative voters.
Sen. Sullivan told CNN that Democrats are trying to cheat in this election, and the NRSC is urging Alaska election officials to remove the rival Sullivan from the ballot to protect the integrity of the primary. For Republicans, the episode underscores long-standing concerns that progressive operatives will exploit election rules and voter confusion rather than win arguments on policy and performance.
Daniel J. Sullivan has rejected the accusations, insisting he is not attempting to mislead anyone and describing himself as a centrist who has supported candidates from both parties. Its my name, my grandfathers name: Dan Sullivan. My dads name: Dan Sullivan," he told CNN, a defense that may now be weighed against the documented ties to a progressive consulting firm and his history of backing Democrats in a race that could prove pivotal for control of the Senate.
