Mounting evidence of large-scale fraud in Minnesotas social services programs is now drawing federal scrutiny, with Vice President JD Vance formally asking the Department of Justice to investigate whether top state officials enabled or ignored schemes tied to the states sizable Somali immigrant community.
According to WND, suspicions have circulated for years that senior figures in Minnesotas government either knew or should have known that billions in taxpayer dollars were being siphoned off through fraudulent claims. The basic question has been straightforward: how could such vast sums be misdirected without complicity or willful blindness from those entrusted with oversight.
Those concerns have now escalated into a formal referral, as Vance confirmed he has sent the matter to the DOJs new Fraud Division after reviewing complaints from state employees who served under Democrat Gov. Tim Walz. The move comes on the heels of a 205-page report from the House Oversight Committee alleging that Walz administration officials retaliated against whistleblowers who raised alarms about apparent fraud.
In a public statement, Vance declared, Ive referred these allegations to DOJs new Fraud Division for criminal investigation. Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and intimidated whistleblowers, they must face justice. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., was equally blunt, stating, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison are responsible for one of the most stunning oversight failures this Committee has ever examined.
The committees report concluded that Walz and Ellison were aware of credible warnings for years but failed to use their authority to halt payments or remove questionable providers from government programs, allowing suspect operators to remain embedded in taxpayer-funded systems. Vance, tapped last winter to lead the Trump administrations anti-fraud efforts, is now leveraging that mandate to press for accountability at the state level.
Walz has responded by accusing President Trump of politicizing federal power, insisting that the president is weaponizing the federal government against Minnesota. Yet experts estimate that taxpayers have lost billions of dollars to fraud in programs such as daycare and other social services, raising profound questions about stewardship, competence, and the cost of progressive governance.
