A celebratory high school graduation in Northern California turned tragic when gunfire erupted in the parking lot, killing an 18-year-old and injuring three others.
The shooting occurred at approximately in the parking lot of Fairfield High School, about 50 miles northeast of San Francisco, according to Just The News. Authorities say the violence broke out just as families and friends were marking a milestone that should have symbolized hope and achievement, not fear and loss.
One man told a CNN affiliate that the shots rang out as families were gathered and the shots were heard as photographs were being taken in the parking lot. Fairfield Police Department Officer Michelle Belyea stated that the wounded victims were 11 years old, 20 years old and 25 years old, underscoring how indiscriminate and reckless the attack was.
Belyea further confirmed that an 18-year-old succumbed to their injuries in the shooting, turning what should have been the start of adulthood into a scene of mourning.
