As reported by Mediaite, Colberts final broadcast from New Yorks Ed Sullivan Theater was framed as a sentimental farewell, capped by music icon Paul McCartney performing his Beatles classic Hello Goodbye and reminiscing about the bands 1964 appearance that ignited Beatlemania in the United States. Yet only hours after the finale aired, just before 2 a.m. ET, President Trump took to Truth Social to unload on the liberal comedian who built much of his brand on mocking Trump and his supporters.
Colbert is finally finished at CBS. Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness hes finally gone! Trump wrote, underscoring a long-running feud that intensified as Colbert repeatedly targeted him throughout both his presidential campaigns and his term in office. When CBS announced last year that the show would end after Colberts decade at the helm, Trump openly reveled in the news.

The networks parent company, Paramount, had already drawn criticism in conservative circles after agreeing to pay Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit over edits made to an interview with thenVice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign, a payout Colbert attacked on-air as a big fat bribe. CBS, however, maintained that the late-night shows cancellation was purely a financial decision, even as Paramount sought federal approval for its merger with Skydance Media, a deal that ultimately moved forward.
