Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy turned what was clearly intended as a Democratic show trial on Capitol Hill into a pointed examination of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrands own ethics and spending habits.
According to WND, the New York Democrat attempted to berate Duffy over a privately sponsored trip tied to the upcoming The Great American Road Trip initiative, a project designed to promote the America 250 celebration and explicitly authorized by Congress. She accused him of impropriety, declaring, It doesnt smell right. I think its wrong, and I think you should explain to the American people why you should spend your time and why you should be getting a vacation that is paid for by companies that you regulate.
Rather than retreat, Duffy pressed the senator on her own financial entanglements, questioning her jurisdiction over law firms and highlighting $7 million in political contributions from the trial bar. Put on the defensive, Gillibrand could only protest weakly, Oh my God. Honestly this hs nothing to do with members of Congress.
Gillibrand tried to reassert control of the hearing by accusing Duffy of partisanship and abuse of office. Secretary Duffy. Secretary Duffy. I think you should be telling this committee why this is what Im concerned about. You are political, and you are using your position in political ways, she said.
Duffy then drew attention to her own travel record, citing half a million dollars paid by the trial bar to fly you on a private jet. Gillibrand flatly denied the charge, insisting, Ive never been on a private jet. No. We dont, we dont, we dont members of Congress arent allowed. Not true.
Those denials quickly collided with the public record, as the report noted, Um about that. The New York Democrat dropped nearly $270,000 on charter flights in 2024 alone one of the highest totals in the Senate. During a midterm year in 2022, she reportedly spent about $350,000. Facts, as they say, are stubborn things. On social media, viewers concluded that Duffy just DEMOLISHED Gillibrand, underscoring how badly the exchange backfired on the senator.
Once the theatrics subsided, Duffy calmly laid out the rationale for his travel, tying it directly to his statutory responsibilities under President Trumps administration. This was officially part of America 250, and you all sanctioned America 250, Duffy continued. This body told me that Im supposed to promote tourism and travel, and thats what it does as well.
Gillibrands own use of taxpayer-funded air travel has drawn scrutiny beyond this hearing room, particularly in her home state. WGRZ has reported that Gillibrand ranked No. 2 among all senators in tax dollars spent on charter plane flights last year, trailing only fellow New York Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer.
The two lawmakers regularly use charter planes to visit cities around the state when Congress is not in session, the report said. For many Americans who expect fiscal restraint and personal accountability from their elected officials, the contrast between Gillibrands rhetoric and her record only reinforces why conservatives continue to demand tighter oversight of congressional perks while supporting administration officials who can defend their actions with facts rather than talking points.
