Representatives Majorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar have been reinstated to their committee assignments in this new Republican-controlled Congress after they were stripped of those assignments in the previous Congress.
Breitbart reports that the 30-member House Republican Steering Committee decided to seat Majorie Taylor Greene on the Homeland Security Committee and Oversight Committees. They also placed Paul Gosar back on committees. Gosar was selected for the House Natural Resources and Oversight Committees based on multiple reports about the activities taking place in Congress.
The recommendations by the Steering Committee are almost always approved, but they need to be accepted by the entire House Republican Conference.
According to Breitbarts reporting, the Oversight Committee is expected to hold multiple investigations into the Biden Administration and officials close to the Administration in general. On top of that, Greene has called to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for the total lack of border security at the southern border under Bidens watch.
This marks a change compared to how Congress has operated in recent years. It will be the first time Greene and Gosar have been on committees in the House since 2021.
The Hill pointed out that Greene was stripped of her committee assignments in 2021 by the Democrat House. She was taken off these assignments in February 2021, just one month after being sworn in for the first time, because of her past association with conspiracy theories.
Gosar was taken off of his assignments after he posted a video on Twitter in November 2021 that was an anime video that depicted him swinging swords at President Biden and killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). He took the video down and clarified that he did not condone violence against anyone.
In November 2021, after winning the majority in Congress, soon-to-be Speaker McCarthy stated that he would put Gosar and Greene back on committees once he was handed the Speakers gavel. It appears that he has held up to that commitment, and now these two potentially controversial members of Congress will have their chance to express their views on committees once again.
On top of all of this, McCarthy removed certain controversial Democrat members of Congress from their assignments on committees as he sought to take the same kinds of actions that the Democrats took against members of the Republican Party in Congress.
