Embattled former FBI Director James Comey resurfaced in the media Monday evening, sitting for a sympathetic interview with MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace even as he faces serious federal charges tied to alleged threats against President Donald J.
Trump.
According to the Gateway Pundit, this marked Comeys first public appearance since a grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina handed down a two-count felony indictment. COUNT ONE alleges he did knowingly and willfully make a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon, the President of the United States, while COUNT TWO charges that he knowingly and willfully did transmit in interstate and foreign commerce a communication that contained a threat to kill the President, Donald J. Trump.
The case centers in part on a cryptic Instagram post Comey published last May featuring the numbers 8647. Accompanying a photo of a seashell, Comey wrote, Cool shell formation on my beach walk, a caption critics argue was a thinly veiled threat, as 86 47? is a threat to eliminate/kill the 47th president.
Pressed by Wallace about his legal troubles, Comey cast himself as the target of a political vendetta by President Trump. Im gonna have to deal with this as long as Donald Trump in the White House thinking of me in the middle of the night, Comey said, adding, Trump wakes up at 3 am in the morning thinking about me. The reverse does not happen.
Comey further suggested that federal prosecutors would not stop with this case, remarking, If this case falls apart, theyll do something else, portraying the Justice Departments actions as relentless. Yet when Wallace asked about additional evidence beyond the Instagram post, Comey abruptly shut down, refusing to elaborate.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has publicly indicated that the indictment rests on far more than a single social media message. Blanche stated that the charges are supported by a broader body of evidence beyond the Instagram post, while Comey told Nicolle Wallace that he cant talk about the other evidence, leaving open significant questions about what else investigators have uncovered.
