Rep.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez used a high-profile appearance at the University of Chicago on Friday night to dismiss talk of a 2028 presidential bid and instead tout a sweeping ideological project that goes far beyond any single office.
Speaking with longtime Democratic strategist David Axelrod at the universitys Institute of Politics, the New York congresswoman was pressed about mounting speculation over whether she might seek the White House or challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. According to the Gateway Pundit, Ocasio-Cortez quickly pivoted away from the horse-race questions and framed herself as a crusader against what she described as entrenched economic and media power.
She took particular aim at an opinion piece in The Washington Post, which she derided as this op-ed that Jeff Bezos paid for in The Washington Post, claiming it contained a pointed warning about her political future. You know, its funny because in this op-ed that Jeff Bezos paid for in The Washington Post, there was this line that you even mentioned earlier, about, Well, as a potential 2028 contender, X, Y, Z. And in the context of that, it was very clear that this was a veiled threat, right? she said, casting herself as a target of billionaire-backed media.
Ocasio-Cortez went further, alleging that wealthy elites were attempting to discipline her for stepping out of line with the party establishment and corporate interests. This was the elite saying, If you want this job, you just stepped out of line. And we want you to know where the real power is. And its in the modern-day barons who own the Post and own the algorithms, and were gonna well make an example out of you,' Ocasio-Cortez said, portraying herself as a victim of a shadowy power structure.
The congresswoman then insisted that her goals transcend any single office or title, a claim that underscores how deeply ideological her project is. The far-left representative continued, And whats funny about that is that they assume that my ambition is positional. They assume that my ambition is a title or a seat.
She then laid out a sweeping progressive agenda that would dramatically expand government control over healthcare, wages, and social policy, signaling that her ambitions are aimed at permanent structural change rather than temporary electoral victories. My ambition is way bigger than that, she said. My ambition is to change this country. Presidents come and go, Senate, House seats, elected officials, come and go, but single-payer healthcare is forever. A living wage is forever. Workers rights are forever. Womens rights all of that.
Ocasio-Cortez also suggested that her lack of childhood fixation on high office frees her to pursue this agenda without being constrained by traditional political calculations. Ocasio-Cortez ranted, And so, anyways, a finer point to your question is that, when you arent attached, right? When you havent been, like, fantasizing about being this or that since the time you were seven years old, um, it is tremendously liberating, because I get to wake up every day and say, How am I gonna meet the moment?'
Her comments arrive amid months of speculation on the left about her long-term ambitions, with activists and commentators openly floating her as a future presidential contender in a post-President Trump political landscape. For many progressives, her rhetoric about forever policies such as single-payer healthcare and mandated living wages signals a desire to lock in expansive government programs that would be difficult to reverse, even under conservative leadership.
Conservatives, meanwhile, saw her remarks as confirmation that her project is not about liberty or limited government, but about centralized control dressed up as compassion. AOC is a genius at manipulation, one X user wrote. Shes not interested in freedom. She is interested in change. Which is a euphemism for control. This is a form of ideological fascism posing as need-based populism. The free shit club needs to control our freedoms to pay for her/its agenda.
Others mocked her self-styled revolutionary posture and urged her to return to private life rather than continue pushing an agenda that would expand the state and burden taxpayers. Another quipped, Im going on record as hoping she runs back to bartending where she can impress drunken patrons with her fabricated gibberish without harming anyone.
