Illegal aliens are increasingly abandoning asylum and humanitarian claims and opting to leave the United States under President Donald Trumps intensified immigration enforcement, with new data showing a dramatic rise in so-called voluntary departures.

According to Gateway Pundit, immigration court records reviewed by The Washington Post show that more than 80,000 illegal immigrants accepted voluntary departure orders between January 2025 and March 2026. This figure is more than seven times higher than during the final 15 months of the Biden administration, when roughly 11,400 chose to leave voluntarily.
The surge underscores how the Trump administrations tougher enforcement posture is accelerating self-deportation and persuading many migrants to exit rather than remain in detention while contesting removal. Yet millions of illegal aliens still remain in the country after exploiting what critics describe as the Biden regimes open-border policies.
Under federal law, voluntary departure allows an immigrant to leave the United States on his or her own terms instead of receiving a formal deportation order, a distinction that can make it easier to seek legal reentry in the future. The sharp increase in such departures coincides with a major rise in ICE detention under Trump, with many migrants now facing extended stays in custody while awaiting immigration hearings.
Court data reviewed by the left-leaning Vera Institute of Justice found that more than 70 percent of illegals granted voluntary departure orders during Trumps second term were in detention when they agreed to leave. The numbers began climbing soon after the administration broadened immigration enforcement operations and dismantled many Biden-era limits on arrests and detention.
In July 2025, ICE acting director Todd Lyons issued new guidance sharply restricting bond eligibility for migrants who entered the country illegally, making it far more likely they would remain detained throughout their proceedings. Monthly voluntary departures then jumped from fewer than 1,000 per month under Biden to more than 9,000 in March 2026 alone.
Texas recorded the highest number of voluntary departures, followed by Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, and California, reflecting where enforcement has been most robust. The Department of Homeland Security said millions of illegal immigrants have effectively self-deported since Trump returned to office because they know immigration laws are now being enforced aggressively.
The administration has also actively promoted voluntary departure inside detention centers and immigration courts as part of its broader deportation agenda, signaling a decisive break from the leniency of the previous administration. For conservatives who have long demanded secure borders and the consistent application of immigration law, the data suggest that firm enforcement is not only deterring new illegal crossings but also prompting those already here unlawfully to remove themselves.
