Alan Dershowitz says his long-running friendship with comedian Larry David collapsed the moment he publicly defended President Donald Trump, revealing that the comics famously irritable persona is, in his view, no act at all.
According to Mediaite, Dershowitz discussed the rift during a Wednesday appearance with columnist Miranda Devine, who pressed him on how his relationship with David unraveled. David, a fixture of liberal Hollywood, has repeatedly attacked President Trump and his supporters, both in interviews and through his HBO series.
That hostility was woven into a recent season of Davids show, where his character dons a MAGA hat to repel social interactions, implying that merely being seen with a Trump supporter is socially toxic. The gag underscored a broader cultural message from the left: that conservatives, and especially Trump voters, are to be shunned rather than debated.
Speaking about David, Dershowitz said: It was a one-sided friend. I mean, he always asked me for things. He never gave me anything. He asked me to help his daughter get into college, which I did. He asked me for a number of other favors, which I did. And you know, he came to my house and worked out in my gym. He would come over the house and had dinner all the time; but the minute I defended Donald Trump, he started screaming at me, and yelling at me, and saying I was despicable and horrible and all of that. And so, our one-sided friendship terminated.
Dershowitz went further, arguing that Davids intolerance reflects a deeper problem on the left with basic civility toward dissenting views. You know, my wife never liked Curb Your Enthusiasm. I did, but I cant watch it anymore because I realized that the curmudgeon character is not a character. Its the real Larry David. Hes a mean, nasty man, and he cant tolerate contact with people who have a different point of view from him politically. So, thats not the kind of friend I want to have.
