Jon Stewart used his Comedy Central platform Monday night to ridicule Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for being outshined by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller during the frantic evacuation at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner following an attempted shooting.
The scare unfolded Saturday when a gunman tried to breach the Washington venue, prompting Secret Service and security personnel to rush senior officials, including President Donald Trump, out of the ballroom. According to Mediaite, Stewart seized on the chaotic footage as raw material for a pointed monologue that blended dark humor with sharp political commentary.
Stewart first zeroed in on the press corps, mocking reporters and guests who appeared more concerned with salvaging their table wine than their own safety. He also lampooned one attendee who calmly continued eating his salad as alarms sounded and people scrambled for the exits.
From there, the late-night host shifted his focus to the conduct of top government officials under pressure. Nobody revealed their true colors more than the Trump administration, he said, taking a jab at Vice President JD Vances quickstep exit, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseths prowl.
The most biting segment centered on Kennedy and his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, as Secret Service agents hustled the health secretary away from the danger. Video showed Hines momentarily left outside the protective ring of agents, reaching toward her husband as the security detail clustered around him.
Kennedy was whisked away by a Secret Service hive, who apparently couldnt spare one worker bee for Hines, Stewart observed, skewering both the optics and the priorities on display. Just do you see it? Do you see right there? Theres a group of men carrying another man out of the room. And then theres a woman, he continued. A woman who appears to be now, Im not obviously [an expert] desperately reaching out for someone to care to help her!
The woman reaching up, in agony and fear, thats RFK Jr.s wife! the host exclaimed, emphasizing the emotional punch of the clip. How f*cked up is that scene? Stewart asked. May I show you the tape again? I want to show you something. Pay attention to the foreground. Somethings about to happen. I want to show it to you. Hold on.
Theyre whisking RFK out. His wife. FREEZE! he narrated, as the footage paused on Miller stepping into frame, shielding his pregnant wife while guiding her away from the threat. The guy right there shielding the pregnant woman from danger? Stewart said. Thats Stephen Miller and his wife. Stephen Miller carefully protecting his wife.
The audience erupted in laughter as Stewart drove home the contrast between the two mens responses. See, RFK? Turned out, thats an option, the comic joked. You can protect your wife instead of, I dont know, beating her to the escape pod.
Stewart then reminded viewers of Millers reputation as a hardline policy architect, underscoring the irony that a man routinely vilified by the left was the one visibly prioritizing his familys safety. And the guy who outshined you is Stephen f*cking Miller! he told Kennedy. Thats who outshined you! Thats who was more chivalrous! Stephen Miller, a guy who probably jerks off to the new movie.
And now, for the rest of your life, your wife is gonna ask you a question no ones ever asked before, ever: Why cant you be more like Stephen Miller? Why? Stewart concluded, leaving Kennedy not just politically bruised but personally diminished in the eyes of a national audience.
