The Dallas Cowboys pre-draft media session turned into an unexpected political cameo on Wednesday when Bill Clinton strode into the teams press conference and briefly stole the spotlight from football.
According to Gateway Pundit, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones abruptly halted his remarks as Clinton entered, rising to greet the Democrat politician and nearly losing his balance at the edge of the stage. Jones motioned him forward with a folksy welcome, declaring, Look at this right here. Come in this house, as cameras and reporters quickly shifted their attention.
Jones, who has long cultivated high-profile friendships across the political spectrum, lavished praise on Clinton in front of the assembled media. Hes been a wonderful, not only president, but a friend over the years, and really happy to have you here today, Jones said, as Clinton replied, Thank you. Glad to see you. Happy draft day.
After the brief exchange, Jones turned back to the press corps with an uncharacteristically warm tribute to the reporters who cover his team. Theyve spent their life and elected to spend their life in sport, and thats why theyre here. And they could have been doctors or lawyers, Jones said, before joking about their often-tough coverage.
And so when they kick my you know what, and they do, I say guys, were actually cousins because we both elected to spend our years in sports around here. So be a little sweeter if you will, he said, appealing for a lighter touch from a media culture that rarely grants it, especially to conservative figures. And that goes there, but great bunch of folks. They do a great job, and theyre a big part of what sports and the NFL is about. And this unquestionably will be the largest press conference going on in the NFL today, Jones added, as Clinton worked the room and charmed reporters on the eve of the NFL Draft, which begins Thursday evening.
