A pregame parachute demonstration at Virginia Techs spring football game went awry on Saturday when a skydiver slammed into the stadiums massive scoreboard and was left dangling above the field.
According to Gateway Pundit, video from the scene shows two parachutists descending into Lane Stadium with large American flags trailing behind them. The first jumper cleared the scoreboard without incident, but the second appeared to catch a gust of wind, veering off course and crashing into the towering Virginia Tech video board.
The collision left the parachute snarled among the letters, tearing part of the structure and exposing internal lighting as stunned spectators looked on. The parachuter also dropped an American flag and a smaller chute into the stands below, a jarring sight in what was intended as a patriotic display.
The game, scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff, was delayed for more than an hour as emergency crews deployed a crane and other equipment to reach the stranded jumper. The parachuter was eventually brought down safely after roughly 45 minutes, drawing relief from fans who had watched the rescue unfold in real time.
Virginia Tech later confirmed the skydivers condition in a statement shared on social media, noting that the skydiver was safely secured and is currently stable. We are grateful to report that the skydiver was safely secured and is currently stable. Our primary focus remains on their well-being, the university wrote in a post on the X platform.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the first responders, event staff, and medical personnel for their swift, coordinated and professional response. The event was Virginia Techs annual spring game, a controlled intrasquad scrimmage in which no official score is kept, designed to prepare players and coaches for the upcoming season rather than to produce a formal result.
