Trump Proposes $152M Revamp Of Alcatraz Into State-Of-The-Art Prison Facility

President Donald Trump has formally requested $152 million in federal funding to refurbish and reopen the legendary Alcatraz prison, the island fortress that looms just off San Francisco near the Golden Gate Bridge.

According to WND, the proposal would transform the long-dormant facility, now a major tourist destination, into a state-of-the-art secure prison facility. The BBC reported Trumps new plan for The Rock, which would add another high-security option to a federal system already anchored by the Alcatraz of the Rockies in Florence, Colorado, and a proposed Alligator Alcatraz in Florida for illegal alien criminals.

Democrats are already lining up against the initiative, signaling yet another clash between tough-on-crime conservatives and a left wing that has spent years pushing soft-on-crime policies. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said it was absurd on its face and should be rejected outright.

Her criticism went further, insisting, Rebuilding Alcatraz into a modern prison is a stupid notion that would be nothing more than a waste of taxpayer dollars and an insult to the intelligence of the American people. Trump, by contrast, has framed the move as a strategic investment in public safety, noting on social media last year that he was directing the Bureau of Prisons, the DOJ, FBI and others to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ.

The islands history underscores its symbolic power in the national debate over law and order, having served as a naval defense fort, a military prison, a federal penitentiary and later a Hollywood backdrop. It once confined notorious criminals such as Al Capone and George Machine Gun Kelly, and Trumps allies argue that restoring it as a maximum-security facility would send a clear message that serious crime still carries serious consequences.
