The New York Times has been forced to walk back key elements of a high-profile story on President Donald Trumps administration after publishing what a senior U.S. official says were completely fabricated quotes.
According to WND, Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg personally contacted the paper after its article, Trump Sets Pax Silica Fund to Reduce Global Dependencies, misrepresented both his words and the scope of the administrations investor consortium. The piece focused on a plan to pool investments in energy products, critical minerals and semiconductors as part of a broader effort to reduce dangerous supply-chain reliance on hostile or unstable regimes.
Helberg publicly rebuked the paper over the weekend, writing, The @NYTimes completely FABRICATED quotes that never happened. We submitted corrections (multiple times). They ignored them. So for posterity, sharing my full remarks, Helberg said. The Times subsequently issued multiple corrections, including one walking back an inflated claim that the initiative sought $4 trillion in investment, when the actual target is $1 trillion.
The paper also admitted it had falsely quoted Helberg as calling the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz a blessing, when he had in fact described it as a lesson. Another correction acknowledged that members were not pledging to invest $1 trillion, but rather collectively manage that amount in assets.
Helberg has framed the initiative as a strategic response to global vulnerabilities, saying it would serve as a catalyst as the U.S. and allied nations confront mounting supply chain risks. The Times did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundations request for comment, and its latest missteps follow earlier high-profile corrections involving conservatives, including a false claim that Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk made an antisemitic remark and a widely criticized 2021 report suggesting Border Patrol agents were whipping Haitian migrants with horse reins.
