With the Department of Homeland Security still operating under a cloud of uncertainty and air travel snarled at major hubs, President Donald Trump is intensifying his campaign against weak and ineffective Republican senators who refuse to scrap the Senate filibuster.
The former president, now the GOPs dominant voice on Capitol Hill strategy, is openly demanding that his own party dismantle the 60-vote threshold that has long allowed a minority to block legislation. As reported by WND, Trump used his Truth Social platform Saturday evening to declare, It is time for the Senate Filibuster to END, adding, Those weak and ineffective Republicans Senators that stand in the way of this should be exposed to the public. The Democrats are CRAZY!
Trump had already previewed this hardline stance days earlier, pressing Republicans to recognize the stakes of continued procedural paralysis. When is enough, enough for our Republican Senators, he asked Thursday, warning that There comes a time when you must do what should have been done a long time ago, and something which the Lunatic Democrats will do on day one, if they ever get the chance. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, and get our airports, and everything else, moving again. Also, add the complete, all five items, SAVE AMERICA ACT items. Go for the Gold!!!
His call is resonating with at least some conservatives in the Senate who see the chambers rules as a shield for Democratic obstruction rather than a safeguard of deliberation. Appearing on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News Channel, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., a senior member of the Homeland Security Committee, endorsed Trumps demand and lamented that the Senate is broken.
How much [more] broken can the United States Senate get? Its always been described as the saucer beneath the cup of tea to cool the passions, Johnson said, invoking the traditional metaphor for the upper chambers moderating role. Its more like the plaque in the arteries that are causing a heart attack.
Johnson argued that the dysfunction is no longer theoretical when the nation faces direct threats and yet cannot even secure basic funding for its own protection. How could it be much more broken when we cant even fund the very agency when were at war with Iran, they might possibly have sleeper cells here in this country, we cant even fund the very agency designed to keep that homeland safe? I dont see how it could get much worse. Im for ending the 60-vote threshold and ending the filibuster.
Still, the Wisconsin Republican acknowledged that dismantling the filibuster will require a political fight inside his own conference, where some GOP senators cling to the rule as a matter of institutional tradition. It will require Republican public pressure to force enough Republican senators to do that, he said, warning that Unfortunately, I think weve got Republican senators who are willing to die on that hill as well.
Johnson suggested that Democrats behavior could ultimately push reluctant Republicans to act, as the left continues to use Senate procedure to block conservative priorities. You just might see Democrats being so obnoxious, so obstructionist, maybe enough of my colleagues, we need 50 of em, to change that rule and get rid of the filibuster.
The senator also tied the filibuster directly to the broader fight over election integrity and border security, particularly the stalled SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship and photo identification to vote. He stressed that the 60-vote threshold is precisely what Democrats are using to shield their long-term political strategy from accountability.
With that 60-vote threshold, Democrats this is a hill they will die on, because any kind of election integrity really is existential to their game plan of turning America into a one-party nation. They flooded this country with millions of illegal immigrants, put em in sanctuary cities to plus up their numbers.
Johnson went further, accusing the left of orchestrating street-level chaos and then exploiting the fallout to weaken law enforcement and expand government control. But heres what they [did] even more deviously. They trained activists to obstruct justice, encourage them to put themselves in harms way knowing they could get harmed. They got two martyrs and then theyre using those martyrs as their excuse to try and defund law enforcement, to defund the very agencies that are designed to clean up the mess they created. Thats what were dealing with. Thats who Democrats are.
For Johnson, the path forward requires Republicans to stop internal dithering and present a united front that squarely assigns responsibility for the current crisis. Republicans need to get united and we need to make sure that we blame Democrats because that is where the fault lies. Lets get as much DHS funded as possible, move to reconciliation, pass a reconciliation bill focused on DHS funding through fiscal year 2029 and then be ready for another reconciliation to fund the rest of the government starting in October.
As Trump and Johnson converge on the same message, the debate over the filibuster is no longer an abstract procedural quarrel but a test of whether Republicans are willing to use power to secure the border, restore election integrity, and keep Americans safe. With Homeland Security funding, airport operations, and the SAVE America Act all hanging on the Senates rules, conservatives are pressing the question of whether preserving a Senate tradition is worth allowing Democrats to continue blocking reforms that millions of voters sent Republicans to Washington to enact.
