The Acting Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Ha Nguyen McNeill, may have been born at night, but, as the old saying goes, it was not last night.
During a Wednesday hearing of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee, Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman of New Yorks 10th Congressional District appeared to underestimate McNeills grasp of both policy and politics. According to RedState, the session focused on the Department of Homeland Securitys (DHS) use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to back up TSA at certain airports amid the ongoing government shutdown, now stretching past 40 days and driven by Democrat leadership.
The Republican-led hearing produced stark testimony that underscored how the Lefts purely political decision to keep DHS shuttered is undermining the nations security infrastructure on multiple fronts. Witnesses detailed operational disruptions, staffing shortfalls, and mounting risks, all while Democrats continue to treat the shutdown as leverage rather than a liability.
In one key exchange, McNeill told Republican Rep. Andrew Garbarino (NY-02) that the shutdown is already jeopardizing preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will bring massive international crowds to the United States. She stressed that It takes a TSO four to six months to be fully certified in all functions to operate a checkpoint. And so at this point, if we bring on any new TSOs,a timeline that leaves little room for political gamesmanship when global events are on the horizon.
Another Republican member pressed McNeill directly on how damaging what conservatives have dubbed Schumer Shutdown 3.0 has been to the effort to safeguard the homeland. McNeill explained that [since 9/11] every day, we assess the risk posture for terror threats, and she made clear that the shutdown has become a serious obstacle to that daily, mission-critical work.
Her assessment of the human toll was equally blunt, highlighting the cost of partisan brinkmanship on front-line personnel. As McNeill put it, What I'm hearing from our workforce is that what's happening to them is nothing short of cruel.
Subcommittee Chair Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS-03) went further, asking McNeill, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Administrator Nick Andersen, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) head Victoria Barton whether American lives are being endangered by Democrats 40-day political stunt. The panels responses left little doubt that the long-term impacts of the Democrat-driven DHS shutdown are eroding Americas security posture at a time of heightened global instability.
Guests office later highlighted the exchange, noting that he had asked agency witnesses whether America is less safe due to the prolonged closure. McNeill responded, We are really concerned about our security posture, while Andersen warned, The threat environment isa sobering acknowledgment that the threat picture is worsening even as Democrats keep the department hamstrung.
Politically, the testimony is a damaging optic for Democrats as they head toward the midterm elections, exposing the gap between their rhetoric on security and the real-world consequences of their tactics. For Republicans, the hearing reinforced their argument that Democrats are willing to sacrifice national security to score points against the Trump 47 administration and its policies.
Democrats on the panel, for their part, did not disappoint in revealing their priorities, continuing to fixate on ICE and to demonize enforcement officials with overheated rhetoric. Their line of questioning made clear that harassing Trump 47 administration officials and undermining immigration enforcement remains a higher priority than restoring full operational capacity at DHS.
During the hearing, Rep. Dan Goldman attempted a classic gotcha moment by pressing McNeill on whether she would prefer TSA employees receiving paychecks or ICE agents working in airports. The question was framed to force a false choice between paying TSA staff and deploying ICE support, but McNeill refused to take the bait and did not accept the premise of his loaded inquiry.
Observers who value serious governance over political theater might find the exchange difficult to stomach. As one account of the hearing warned, If you have a quesy stomach, readers, be warned. This is gross.
A clip circulated from the session underscored the partisan divide, with Republicans emphasizing their efforts to resolve the shutdown while Democrats appeared more interested in scoring rhetorical hits. At todays @HomelandGOP hearing on DHS, Ms. McNeill from @TSA said she is thankful that ICE has helped alleviate the burden TSA is facing as we are in the third shutdown of this fiscal year. While Congressional Republicans are working to end the shutdown, Democrats are tryinga framing that aligns with the broader conservative critique of the Lefts approach to border and homeland security.
The hearing also unfolded against a backdrop of fresh ethical questions surrounding one of the Democratic Partys most aggressively partisan figures, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA-14). In the early hours of Wednesday, RedStates Ben Smith reported that Swalwell, who has long harbored ambitions of moving from the House to Californias governors mansion, might have some legal woes to worry about, noting that an Eric Swalwell campaign operation Funneled Over $300K to Criminal Defense Attorneys, Filings Show.
For conservatives, the prospect of accountability for Swalwellwhose record includes controversial ties and relentless attacks on political opponentsseems more than fitting. As one commentator put it, Could not be happening to a more worthy person, I say.
