A newly restored statue of Christopher Columbus has been installed just steps from the White House, the latest addition to President Donald Trumps growing array of historical monuments on federal property.
The monument, now prominently positioned outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building along Pennsylvania Avenue, is a reconstruction of a statue first unveiled in Baltimore in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan and later toppled and dumped into the harbor during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots, according to The Post Millennial. Its damaged remnants were painstakingly recovered and restored through a collaboration of Italian American community leaders, local officials, and sculptors, with financial backing from charities and federal grants.
An inscription on the base reads: Destroyed July 4, 2020, followed by Resurrected 2022. Additional text records that the statue was presented to the White House last year and formally rededicated by Trump in October, underscoring the administrations determination to push back against the lefts campaign of historical erasure.
In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero. And he will continue to be honored as such by President Trump, said spokesman Davis Ingle. The statement reflects a broader conservative insistence that Western civilization and its explorers be remembered for their achievements rather than erased to appease radical activists.
The installation is part of a wider initiative by the administration to expand the presence of monuments to key historical figures throughout the nations capital. Several statues of founding-era leaders have already been placed in the Rose Garden, and officials are advancing plans for a proposed Garden of Heroes in West Potomac Park, expected to showcase hundreds of notable Americans.
Another statue, depicting Declaration of Independence signer Caesar Rodney, is also slated for installation near Pennsylvania Avenue. That piece had previously been removed from public view in Delaware, and its return to prominence in Washington signals a deliberate effort to reclaim and protect the nations heritage from ideological iconoclasm.
