Democrats have unintentionally handed Republicans a powerful political weapon in the escalating fight over national security, Iran, and funding for the Department of Homeland Security, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich argued this week.
Appearing on Kudlow, Gingrich said the lefts hardline posture on security funding has created a rare opening for conservatives to draw a sharp contrast on protecting Americans at home and abroad. According to WND, he framed the current standoff as a moment for Republicans to speak plainly about the stakes and expose what he cast as Democrats willingness to gamble with public safety for partisan gain.
I really believe Trumps doing the right thing. And again, I think in terms of TSA [Transportation Security Administration], the Democrats have given Republicans this huge gift. They are holding the country hostage for political reasons, Gingrich told host Larry Kudlow. And nows the moment to say to people like [Georgia Democratic Sen.] Jon Ossoff, Are you really so left wing, and does Chuck Schumer really control you so much? Youll sell out the Atlanta airport. Youll sell out Delta Airlines. And you dont care what happens to Georgians because you really represent California. Thats the message they have to drive every single day right now.
At the center of the dispute is the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA and the nations airport security infrastructure. The Senate has been locked in a stalemate, with multiple funding measures failing to clear the 60?vote threshold, and Ossoff among those Democrats opposing the legislation and leaving it short of the support needed to advance.
Gingrich argued that this impasse is not an abstract budget fight but a direct test of whether Washington is serious about confronting a hostile regime in Tehran. He stressed that the Iranian dictatorship has been openly antagonistic toward the United States for decades and that its ambitions cannot be wished away by diplomatic slogans or media spin.
Remember, all you have to ask is a straightforward question: What is it worth to you to not have an Iranian nuclear weapon wipe out your city? You can be faced literally with your city being destroyed. This is not fear mongering. The Iranian dictatorship has been at war with the United States since 1979, Gingrich added. Their parliament chants Death to America. They are trying to get nuclear weapons and missiles. They have a determination to defeat us. And so whats it worth to you to have a president with the courage to stand up and do whats right versus all these talking heads on television who dont want to face the cost of their policy ideas?
The United States and Iran have been locked in hostility since the 1979 revolution and the ensuing hostage crisis, a conflict that has unfolded through proxy wars, terror sponsorship, and repeated diplomatic breakdowns rather than a formal declaration of war. That long record, conservatives argue, underscores why a strong, unapologetic American posture is essential and why efforts to downplay the threat amount to wishful thinking.
President Donald Trumps administration has launched major strikes against Iran under Operation Epic Fury, with U.S. commanders vowing that American interests will be defended and that Tehran will not be allowed to simply wait out U.S. resolve. The campaign has triggered an ongoing war with Iran that has sharply divided public opinion, with polls indicating it may be among the least popular conflicts in modern history even as many on the right insist that retreat would only embolden a regime that chants Death to America and seeks nuclear weapons.
