Governor Abigail Spanberger's Controversial Support For Anti-ICE School Walkouts Leaves Parents Furious

Virginia governor Abigail Spanberger, who brands herself a political moderate, used her response to President Donald Trumps State of the Union address to applaud anti-ICE school walkouts that have disrupted classrooms across the country.

According to The Washington Free Beacon, Spanberger held up the protestssome organized by openly Marxist groups and resulting in student suspensions in Virginia and beyondas proof of the "determination" of students who "demand more from their government." Her praise comes despite growing concern among parents and educators that these demonstrations are less about civic engagement and more about advancing a radical agenda at the expense of classroom instruction.

Students nationwide, often prodded by activist teachers and outside organizers, have been leaving class to protest the administrations immigration enforcement policies. In Virginia alone, one school suspended 323 students for joining such a walkout, while in Georgia the Party for Socialism and Liberation has reportedly held seminars coaching teachers and students on how to stage walkouts and related protest actions.

Spanbergers embrace of these tactics sits uneasily beside her carefully cultivated image as a centrist Democrat focused on academic recovery. On the campaign trail last year, the former House member pledged to reverse the "learning loss" suffered by Virginia students who were kept out of classrooms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She also castigated state leaders after Virginia ranked 51stdead lastin math recovery scores for public school students. "As governor, I will work to make sure our school divisions, our schools, and our teachers have the funding and support staff they need to challenge our students and tackle learning lossbecause I know that the success of Virginias next generation depends on the strength of our schools," Spanberger said.

For many conservatives, her rhetoric on education funding and learning loss now clashes sharply with her endorsement of walkouts that pull students from class, particularly when those protests are driven by socialist organizations hostile to immigration enforcement and traditional rule of law. The episode highlights a broader tension within the Democratic Party between appealing to the activist left and addressing the basic educational needs of families who expect schools to teach, not agitate.
