Democrat Senator Adam Schiff has declared that he will boycott President Donald Trumps State of the Union address on Tuesday, breaking with more than twenty years of attendance at the constitutionally mandated event.
As reported by Gateway Pundit, this is the first time Schiff, a long-serving California lawmaker and one of President Trumps most persistent antagonists, has refused to appear at the annual address. His decision underscores the widening partisan divide in Washington, where many on the left increasingly choose protest theatrics over engagement with opposing viewpoints.
Schiff, who helped drive the impeachment efforts against President Trump, announced his boycott in a video message that echoed familiar Democrat talking points. Donald Trump is violating the law and the Constitution. He is ignoring court orders, he is weaponizing the Justice Department to go after his enemies, he is letting loose ICE troops in our streets that are getting people killed, Schiff said.
I will not be attending the State of the Union. Ive never missed one. I have always gone, both to inaugurations and to States of the Union, but we cannot treat this as normal, he continued, framing his absence as a moral stand rather than a partisan stunt. He added, I wont give him the audience he craves for the lies that he tells.
Instead of fulfilling his traditional senatorial role at the Capitol, Schiff will appear at a parallel event branded the Peoples State of the Union, organized by progressive media outlet MeidasTouch and the left-wing advocacy group MoveOn Civic Action. The rally, scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern Time on the National Mall, is billed by organizers as a protest spectacle designed to undermine the Presidents message.
According to reports, Schiff will address the gathering alongside other Democrats in what backers call a counter-narrative to Trumps speech, signaling their preference for activism over institutional decorum. Several others, including Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, have likewise chosen the protest rally over the official address, even as President Trump prepares to lay out his agenda on border security, economic policy, and potential executive actions that many conservatives view as essential to restoring order and prosperity.
