Former Trump Economic Adviser Stephen Moore praised the Supreme Courts recent ruling on tariffs, arguing that the decision correctly reins in executive power and reinforces Congress constitutional authority over taxation.
According to Breitbart, Moore used a hypothetical Democratic administration to underscore why conservatives should welcome the Courts stance, warning that unchecked presidential power on tariffs could easily be weaponized by the left. If Kamala Harris had won the presidency and she said that weve got a climate crisis and we have to tax other countries with tariffs, we wouldnt like that too much. So, I think the court made the right decision here, in terms of saying, look, this has to be approved by Congress, he said during an appearance on CNNs The Lead.
Moore stressed that the ruling aligns with the plain text of the Constitution and protects against executive overreach that could be exploited for progressive causes under a future Democrat administration. [T]he Constitution is pretty clear that tax bills start in the House of Representatives, and the president does not have unilateral authority to raise tariffs, except in special cases of a national emergency or national security, he explained, reiterating his warning to some of my conservative friends with the same Kamala Harris example.
He further emphasized that any tariff policy must now move through the proper legislative channels, restoring a measure of accountability to voters and their elected representatives. He added that if these tariffs are going to be imposed, the next step is to take it to the House and take it to the Senate and see if you can get the votes to do it. I doubt he can. But that is the next legal step to getting the tariffs imposed.
