Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is reportedly working behind the scenes to position California Gov.
Gavin Newsom as the Democratic Partys standard-bearer in the 2028 presidential race.
According to Breitbart, sources close to Pelosi told Axios that the longtime Democratic power broker has been quietly promoting Newsoms future prospects, drawing on a political alliance that dates back to his tenure as mayor of San Francisco. Pelosi has one of the strongest donor networks in Democratic politics. Shes been a key validator for Newsom as hes emerged on the national stage and become one of President Trumps most visible foes, noted Axios.
A former aide to the House Speaker described Pelosi as something of a Gavin fan-girl, remarking that she doesnt crush on many people. The aide further insisted on Pelosis political instincts, saying, I will say this: Shes hardly ever wrong. When she says she sees something, its a real thing.
Advisers also indicated that Pelosi has privately praised Newsoms conduct during the Trump era, admiring how he handled the age of President Donald Trump with a combination of defiance and charm. She previously told the New Yorker that Newsom has been a masterful leader in the age of Trump, underscoring her view of him as a national figure in waiting.
From the standpoint of leadership, vision, and values, knowledge of the issues, strategic thinking about how to get things done hes masterful, she said, offering a sweeping endorsement of his governing style despite Californias ongoing crises. Pelosi also told Vogue that she has seen him grow politically over the years, tying his evolution to his personal life. Ive also seen him have this beautiful family, and for all of us who love him, seeing him evolve has been wonderful to behold, Pelosi said.
While a spokesperson for Pelosi declined to comment, Newsom spokesperson Lindsey Cobia told Axios that the governor has long admired Pelosis role in Democratic politics. Gov. Newsom believes Speaker Pelosi is the epitome of selfless public service and will go down in history as one of the most consequential leaders of our time, said Cobia, a statement that underscores how closely aligned the two liberal power centers remain as Democrats quietly look beyond President Joe Bidens troubled tenure.
