The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has issued a travel advisory to African Americans and people of color, citing the "sustained, blatant, relentless and systemic attack on democracy and civil rights" in Florida.
The advisory comes after the Governor and the State of Florida were accused of silencing African-American voices, leading to a hostile environment for people of color. The NAACP warns that the state devalues and marginalizes the contributions of African Americans and other communities of color.
In response to the advisory, Governor DeSantis dismissed it as a "pure stunt," stating that he will not waste his time on such actions. Christina Pushaw, a former state press secretary and current aide to the Governor, also mocked the advisory, saying that she is looking forward to making dinner plans without the usual wait times. Does this mean no Urban Beach Week?" she said. "Keep the travel advisories coming. It's hard enough to get a dinner reservation in this [Miami] town."
Gov. DeSantis defended his actions and called the travel advisory warning a stunt. "What a joke," DeSantis said. "Yeah, well see, well see how effective that is."
"This is a stunt to try to do that. Its a pure stunt and fine, if you want to waste your time on a stunt, thats fine. But Im not wasting my time on your stunts," he added.
Despite these dismissals, the NAACP's advisory highlights the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality in Florida. The state has a history of racial discrimination and voter suppression, which has led to a disproportionate impact on communities of color. The NAACP's advisory serves as a reminder that the fight for equality is ongoing and that people of color must remain vigilant in protecting their rights.
