California Governor Gavin Newsom used a high-profile appearance at the Munich Security Conference to reassure European elites that President Donald Trumps time in office is fleeting and that they should instead look to California as their long-term partner on climate policy.
According to the Gateway Pundit, Newsom appeared alongside other Democrat hopefuls, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and cast himself as a counterweight to the White House while speaking to foreign leaders eager to see a return to progressive climate orthodoxy. He framed his state as a kind of shadow government on environmental issues, implicitly inviting Europe to bypass the elected President and work directly with Sacramento on climate initiatives.
Newsom opened his remarks with a sweeping denunciation of the President, declaring, Never in the history of the United States of America has there been a more destructive president than the current occupant in the White House in Washington, D.C. Hes trying to recreate the 19th century. Hes a wholly owned subsidiary of big oil, gas, and coal. Hes quite literally reopening coal plants in the United States of America That kind of rhetoric plays well with international climate activists, but it also underscores how far Democrats are willing to go in attacking a sitting commander-in-chief on foreign soil.
The governor boasted about Californias green agenda, insisting, Were proving at scale that we can implement, we can compete, and we can dominate. But Donald Trump is trying to turn back the clock. And so were showing up, but were also showing what can be accomplished the power of emulation. He added, We are in the great implementation in my state, presenting Californias aggressive regulations as a model for the rest of the world, despite the states chronic blackouts, high energy prices, and ongoing exodus of residents and businesses.
Newsoms core message to European leaders was that they should simply wait out the President rather than adjust to the administrations America-first energy strategy. Final word. I hope, if theres nothing else I can communicate today: Donald Trump is temporary. Hell be gone in three years. California is a stable and reliable partner in this space, and its important for folks to understand the temporary nature of this current administration in relationship to the issue of climate change and climate policy. That pitch, combined with separate footage in which Newsom praises Chinas climate policies, highlights a governor seemingly more interested in currying favor abroad than addressing crises at home, from wildfire recovery to homelessness and crumbling infrastructurereminding many critics why they see him as such a snake who would step over his own mother to gain power.
