Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith says he is still weighing a possible 2028 presidential bid, even as he insists he has no desire to run for office.

According to Breitbart, Smith told CBS Newss Robert Costa, So, when somebody talks about me being a president or whatever, I have no desire to be a politician, zero. I have no desire to run for office, yet he conspicuously declined to close the door on a future campaign.

He explained that he is not ruling it out because Id love to be on the debate stages against some of these individuals that think theyre better suited to run the country. Because I think that the American people deserve to listen to and hear from somebody who genuinely cares about making life better for them instead of yourself.

Smith, a longtime ESPN personality, made clear he would seek the White House as a Democrat, saying he could not envision himself running as a Republican despite describing himself as right-leaning on key economic and border issues. Im a fiscal conservative. I cant stand high taxes, but Im a social liberal in the same breath because I believe in living and let live. I pay attention to the desolate and disenfranchised Yes, I like strong borders. Thats absolutely true. We never needed open borders, but we dont need it to be completely closed either. We are a gorgeous mosaic, he said.

Costa later compared the experience of shadowing Smith to his early encounters with President Donald Trump before his political rise, writing on X that spending time with Smith in recent months reminded him of spending a few days with Trump back in 2013-2014. Many laughed at the prospect of a bid. But in an age of celebrity and social media, Costa added, underscoring how a media-driven personality with a large platform can quickly become a serious political contender in todays climate.
