Jordan Neely met his untimely death after an incident on May 1.
Bystanders videotaped an incident that involved an ex-marine pinning a homeless man down in a chokehold. He received help from two other people, one trying to tie him up while another pressed his shoulder. Police have identified one of the men involved but have yet to reveal which one.
Police report that they have been combing through footage to identify and locate the other men involved in the incident. According to The Post Millennial, "Thus far, only Penny has been identified. In the days following the incident, he turned himself into the police. He was subsequently charged with second-degree manslaughter after the city medical examiner determined that Neely died due to "compression of the neck."
According to the N.Y. Post, "The identity of the two men has remained a mystery since they [were] captured on the shocking video a bystander shot of the May 1 confrontation, which began after Neely, 30, allegedly began yelling at other straphangers and throwing [trash]."
After the death of Neely, the case instantly became a firestorm. Many were grateful to Penny. They point out that the longtime homeless man had mental health issues and had threatened passengers. This crowd instantly declared Penny, a hero. However, the other side has branded Penny a murderer. This group questioned the use of force and quickly mentioned that Penny was an ex-marine.
As more witnesses have come forward, video footage is slowly releasing for the public to view. Footage shows Neely screaming about how fed up he felt. He exclaimed that he was tired of feeling hungry, did not care if he went to jail, and more.
Some supporters of Penny set up a fundraiser to cover Penny's legal fees. So far, it has raised over $2 million.
