Several convenience stores in San Franciscos crime-plagued Tenderloin district have allegedly been doubling as hubs for underground casinos, drug operations, and outlets for stolen goods, according to city officials.
The revelations, which highlight once again the deep disorder in one of Americas most progressive cities, were detailed in a recent report from the New York Post and amplified by Breitbart News, underscoring how permissive policies and weak enforcement have allowed criminal enterprises to flourish in plain sight.
According to Breitbart, city leaders announced Thursday that nine locations posing as ordinary convenience stores were in fact fronts for extensive illegal activity, prompting a new round of enforcement actions.
City Attorney David Chius office confirmed that officials have been working to crack down on the nine sites, which were ostensibly operating as neighborhood retailers while allegedly serving as covert casinos and drug dens. His office said the discovery of the sites comes as the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is looking to expand the nighttime safety ordinance that prohibits certain retail stores in high-traffic, drug market areas from operating late at night. The ordinance has been a key enforcement tool for the City Attorneys Office in identifying and shutting down businesses that house substantial illegal activity.
Chiu acknowledged that the problem locations were not typical small businesses trying to serve the community but rather magnets for criminal behavior that thrive in an environment of lax urban governance. He said the stores were magnets for drug activity and some were selling illegal drugs.
The city attorney stressed that while most local enterprises play a constructive role, a small number of late-night outlets have become entrenched in the Tenderloins black-market economy, drawing crime and disorder to already vulnerable streets. Most businesses contribute positively to our neighborhoods, but a handful of late-night retail establishments, like the ones we have shut down, attract significant criminal activity. The nighttime safety ordinance has been helpful in putting these stores on our radar and giving us additional tools to shut down problematic businesses, he added.
One of the most egregious examples cited by officials was the SF Discount Market, where police executed a search warrant and uncovered evidence of a thriving illicit operation behind the faade of a corner store. A raid there turned up nine gambling slot machines, a high-capacity magazine for a Glock handgun, 83 grams of cannabis, and over $10,000 in cash, according to the city attorneys office.
Officers also seized contraband and stolen property displayed for sale, including cartons of cigarettes from other states, 17 iPhones, and merchandise with original price stickers from stores like Walgreens and Sephora. SF Discount Market sold drug paraphernalia, including straight glass pipes commonly used to smoke methamphetamine and crack cocaine, and sheets of aluminum foil commonly used to smoke fentanyl. In October 2024, the City Attorney filed a lawsuit against the store for violating local and state laws, and the Court ordered the store to close while the lawsuit is ongoing.
For many residents, the exposure of these sham businesses merely confirms what they have been living with for years: a cityscape marred by lawlessness, public filth, and open-air drug markets that progressive leaders have failed to control. There are reports of people having to dodge feces on city streets, rampant illegal drug use, violence, and homelessness, and those problems have struck fear in neighbors while businesses have struggled to hire employees.
The broader decline has been so visible that even efforts by the citys new leadership have not reversed the trend, as left-leaning officials continue to resist stronger federal support and tougher enforcement.
In October, Breitbart News reported, San Franciscos streets grew dirtier in the last year, with more feces and graffiti reported by the city, despite the efforts of new reformist Mayor Daniel Lurie, who is resisting President Donald Trumps National Guard.
