An eight-year-old migrant girl has died after suffering a "medical emergency" while in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol in Harlingen, Texas.
This marks the second death of a migrant child in the custody of the Biden administration in just one week. The girl was with her family when she fell ill, and Border Patrol officials called an ambulance to transport her to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. CBP officials have not released the identity and nationality of the girl and her family.
This tragic incident follows a 17-year-old Honduran boy who died in his sleep while in the custody of a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services facility in Safety Harbor, Florida, on May 10.
The boy's mother spoke to the Associated Press and said that her son had told her he was in a shelter and not to worry because he was in the best hands. A few days later, a friend from the top called the mother and delivered the devastating news that her child had died. The cause of death has not been released.
CBP officials have stated that they are investigating the incident and that the Office of Professional Responsibility, the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General, and the Harlingen Police Department have been notified.
The deaths of these two migrant children have raised concerns about the treatment of migrants in U.S. custody and the conditions they are being held in. The Biden administration has faced criticism for handling the situation at the border, with some accusing the administration of not doing enough to address the issue.
