Democratic strategist and former MSNBC host Chris Matthews predicted a sweeping victory for his party in the upcoming midterm elections, confidently forecasting major gains in both chambers of Congress.
According to Breitbart, Matthews used his appearance on MS NOWs Morning Joe to argue that Democrats are on the verge of a substantial House takeover, citing recent special-election margins as proof of a coming wave. Matthews said, First of all, I think the Democrats are poised now to pick up 30 seats in the House. I do that based upon the margins theyve been pulling off for these recent elections, 13 point pickup beyond what the expectations were. That was true of all the states including Tennessee and Miami and everywhere else.
He further pointed to specific statewide races as evidence that Democrats could expand their reach in traditionally competitive or right-leaning areas. And I also think that if you look at Roy Cooper and you look at Sherrod Brown, it looks like they can win those states. They can win, Matthews asserted, framing these contests as part of a broader realignment.
Matthews then turned his fire on moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins, long a target of the left for occasionally siding with conservatives on key votes, including judicial confirmations under President Donald Trump. The time is probably come for Susan Collins to check out. I think you can only get away with being the wrong person in the right and the wrong state for so long. I think shes going to have to lose up there, just like Bobby Casey lost. Sometimes you just run out of time for your candidacy, he claimed, signaling the lefts eagerness to purge centrist Republicans.
Looking to the Senate map, Matthews suggested Democrats could seize control if current polling trends hold, including a potential upset in Alaska. He added, So I think the four if this one in Alaska is real, its real because its four and as you said thats enough to win the Senate. I think its going to make it interesting that the Senate is up for grabs. That will make everybody covering both houses a lot more excited about the prospects. But right now, it looks like the sure thing it looks to me is a pickup of 30 seats in the House.
