Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) used a Wednesday appearance on MSNBCs The Briefing to attack federal immigration enforcement, declaring that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents dont belong in our cities, plain and simple.
.
According to Breitbart, Schumer seized on an officer-involved shooting in Minneapolis to argue against ICEs presence in American communities, even as he conceded that there still needs to be an investigation of the shooting in Minneapolis. He insisted, We should not have ICE agents patrolling our streets. Theyre not needed, they create chaos, and they even create deaths.
Schumer framed his criticism as a rebuke of President Donald Trumps immigration agenda, dismissing federal deployment as sort of Trump strutting around. He claimed local leaders share his opposition, asserting, The mayor of Minneapolis didnt want them. So many other cities didnt.
Despite using the incident to renew his long-running campaign against immigration enforcement, Schumer acknowledged that facts are still emerging. He stated, We need a full investigation here as to what happened.
Pressed on whether the Department of Homeland Securitys budget should further restrict ICE, Schumer signaled support for tighter limits but deferred to congressional process. Im appalled by what they do. I have repeatedly voted for many different restrictions on ICE and the FBI, and I believe that the committee will consider it in a very serious way.
Schumers remarks highlight a deep divide in Washington, where the left increasingly vilifies federal law enforcement while conservatives argue that dismantling ICE would undermine border security and public safety. As Democrats push for more constraints on agencies tasked with enforcing immigration law, Republicans maintain that a nation that refuses to back its own officers in the field risks more chaosnot less.
