Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida has criticized Republican Governor Ron DeSantis recent crackdown on illegal migrants, claiming that it will harm Floridas agricultural economy.

The legislation, signed on May 10, requires hospitals to inquire about the immigration status of patients, allocates $12 million to transport illegal immigrants out of the state, and makes it a crime to transport illegal migrants into Florida knowingly.

Wasserman Schultz stated that DeSantis has created a nightmarish culture of fear for immigrants in our state, and warned that the new law would have a devastating impact on the states economy, including tourism, construction, agriculture, and food and hospitality industries she added.

Wasserman Schultzs comments came during an interview with MSNBC host Jose Diaz-Balart. She also referenced Arizonas similar crackdown on illegal migrants, which hurt the states economy.

Liberals have criticized DeSantis for sending flights of migrants to Marthas Vineyard in September 2022, with some calling for a Justice Department investigation. However, documents obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation showed that the migrants were informed of their destination.

In addition to the recent legislation, DeSantis sent 1,500 Florida National Guard personnel to Texas to assist the state after Title 42 expired. The Biden administration allowed Title 42 to lapse at 11:59 p.m. EST on May 11.

According to data released by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), over 1.2 million illegal immigrants have been encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border during fiscal year 2023, following 2,378,944 encounters in fiscal year 2022 and 1,734,686 in fiscal year 2021. Fox News reported that 600,000 migrants evaded CBP in fiscal year 2022.
