An ISIS-inspired terror plot targeting a North Carolina grocery store on New Year's Eve was successfully dismantled by the FBI Charlotte, showcasing the agency's vigilance and commitment to national security.
As reported by Gateway Pundit, the Justice Department disclosed that 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant from Mint Hill had been plotting an attack using knives and hammers. Sturdivant believed he was in contact with an ISIS affiliate online, but his correspondent was actually an undercover federal agent.
"During his online communications with the OC, Sturdivant said, 'I will do jihad soon,' and proclaimed he was 'a soldier of the state,' meaning ISIS," the U.S. Attorneys Office stated, according to Fox News. The DOJ further revealed that Sturdivant had plans to target a specific grocery store in North Carolina and was considering acquiring a firearm to complement his arsenal of knives.
Fox News detailed the FBI's intervention, which prevented the attack and led to Sturdivant's arrest. He now faces charges of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, as announced by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina. FBI Director Kash Patel praised the agency's efforts, stating, "The FBI and our partners continued working 24/7 over the holidays protecting the American people, and this case out of Charlotte foiling another alleged New Year's Eve attacker is the latest example of their tremendous work."
He emphasized the swift action taken by the teams, which undoubtedly saved lives, and acknowledged the contributions of the Joint Terrorism Task Force and regional partners in New York and Western North Carolina.
In a related development, the FBI recently thwarted another ISIS-inspired attack in Texas. John Michael Garza, Jr., 21, from Midlothian, was charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization after he delivered bomb-making materials to an undercover agent posing as an ISIS member. The DOJ reported that Garza had explained how to mix the bomb components and even offered to provide an instructional video. Law enforcement swiftly apprehended Garza following the meeting.
