CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss has extended an invitation to actor George Clooney to visit her newsroom following his accusation that she is "dismantling" the network's journalistic integrity.
In a response email, Weiss humorously acknowledged Clooney's recent French citizenship and invited him to the CBS Broadcast Center.
According to Mediaite, Weiss expressed her admiration for Clooney's work and suggested he might be interested in learning more about CBS News. She stated, "Bonjour, Mr. Clooney! Big fan of your work. It sounds like youd like to learn more about ours," and extended an "open invitation" to visit during the holidays as she and her team work on relaunching the Evening News.
Clooney's remarks came shortly after Weiss faced criticism over a segment on Trump deportations that was reportedly spiked.
Clooney's critique of Weiss followed his broader condemnation of media networks' settlements with President Trump, which he argued signaled a decline in journalistic courage. He claimed that by choosing to settle lawsuits rather than confront Trump in court, networks like CBS and ABC compromised their duty to uphold journalistic integrity.
"If CBS and ABC had challenged those lawsuits and said, Go, f*ck yourself, we wouldnt be where we are in the country. Thats simply the truth," Clooney asserted.
In July, CBS paid President Trump $16 million to settle a defamation lawsuit related to an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. This settlement occurred six months after ABC reached a similar agreement with the President in December. The settlements have sparked debate over the media's role in maintaining accountability and transparency in the face of political pressure.
