In a recent address to British viewers, ABC's late-night host Jimmy Kimmel declared that "tyranny is booming" in the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
As reported by the Daily Caller, Kimmel delivered a four-minute speech on Britain's Channel 4, a public broadcast network known for featuring high-profile figures to counter the monarch's Christmas message. During his address, Kimmel accused President Trump of fostering an environment where fascism thrives in the U.S.
He attributed his three-day suspension from ABC to false claims he made about the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk's assassination, suggesting that Trump was behind the move to silence him. "I honestly have no idea whats going on over there. I do know whats going on over here, though, and I can tell you that from a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year. Tyranny is booming over here," Kimmel stated.
He further alleged, "You may have read in your colorful newspapers, my countrys president would like to shut me up because I dont adore him in the way he likes to be adored."
Kimmel continued to express his grievances, claiming, "The American government made a threat against me and the company I work for and all of a sudden were off the air." His show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," was temporarily suspended on September 17 after Nexstar and Sinclair Broadcasting decided not to air it due to his remarks about Kirk.
Kimmel had previously asserted that Kirk's alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, was a Trump supporter and likened Trump's response to the assassination to a child's reaction to losing a goldfish. Despite the lack of evidence linking Trump to his suspension, Kimmel accused the administration of "figuratively and literally tearing down the structures of our democracy."
In a dramatic comparison, Kimmel warned, "And the reason Im telling you this story is because maybe youre thinking, oh, a government silencing its critics is something that happens in places like Russia or North Korea or LA, not the UK. Well, thats what we thought, and now weve got King Donny VIII calling for executions. It happens fast."
He also reflected on America's historical aversion to monarchy, stating, "You know, its funny, we Americans are very proud of not having a king. Its kind of why we left. Earlier this year, tens of millions of us marched at protests called No Kings."
In his closing remarks, Kimmel extended an apology to British viewers, assuring them that not all Americans share Trump's views. He implored the UK to allow the U.S. three years to rectify the situation, hinting at the 2028 presidential election. Meanwhile, the UK has faced its own challenges with free speech, as British citizens have been censored and arrested for speech and public prayer in recent years.
According to The Telegraph, police in the United Kingdom have made over 30 arrests per day for offensive online posts. In August 2024, more than a dozen individuals were jailed for allegedly causing "unrest" on social media, and two were sentenced to over a year in prison for inciting "racial hatred" online, as reported by the BBC.
Additionally, a British army veteran was arrested in August 2022 for criticizing LGBTQ and transgender activists online, which authorities claimed caused "anxiety."
