Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with President Donald Trump this weekend following what Zelensky described as a "truly good conversation" on Christmas Day with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The anticipated meeting is scheduled for Sunday at Mar-a-Lago, as reported by Mediaite.
Zelensky took to X on Friday, stating, "We are not losing a single day," and announced the upcoming high-level meeting with President Trump, emphasizing the potential for significant decisions before the New Year. He concluded his message with "Glory to Ukraine!" Earlier in the week, Zelensky expressed openness to a mutual troop withdrawal, contingent upon Russian forces retreating and the establishment of a demilitarized zone under international supervision, according to the Associated Press.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia's Foreign Ministry, conveyed to the AP that there is "slow but steady progress" towards peace, yet Moscow remains firm in its hold over seized territories. Zelensky's recent remarks coincide with President Trump's renewed efforts to broker peace in Ukraine, recalling his earlier, albeit jesting, promise to end the conflict on the first day of his new term.
The Christmas Day dialogue between Zelensky, Witkoff, and Kushner was described by Zelensky as a "truly good conversation," during which they explored "new ideas in terms of formats, meetings, and of course, timing on how to bring a real peace closer." As the Russia-Ukraine conflict approaches its four-year anniversary in February, the international community remains watchful of these developments.
