The tragic death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner aboard a Carnival cruise ship has cast a shadow of suspicion over her 16-year-old stepbrother, who is currently the primary suspect in the case.
The FBI and family members have focused their attention on the stepbrother, who suffers from insomnia and reportedly failed to take his medication during the voyage. The unsettling incident occurred in the cabin shared by Anna, her stepbrother, and her 14-year-old brother.
In the immediate aftermath, Anna's stepmother, Shauntel Kepner, and her ex-husband exchanged text messages that reveal a desperate attempt to shield their son from the implications of the investigation. On November 8, Shauntel urgently texted her ex-husband to discuss an "emergency," as reported by The New York Post. This communication came just a day after Anna's body was discovered concealed beneath her bed.
Court documents obtained by FOX 35 Orlando reveal that on November 9, Shauntel described a brief conversation with their son, who was undergoing evaluation at a medical facility. During this exchange, the boy claimed to have no recollection of the events and was allowed a call to hear his parents' reassurance of their love. The messages also stressed the importance of keeping the minor out of the broader narrative surrounding Anna's death.
Authorities have determined that Anna's death was caused by "mechanical asphyxiation." On the night of her demise, her younger brother reportedly overheard "yelling" from the cabin, where she was alone with her erratic stepbrother. Anna's father, Christopher Kepner, expressed a desire for his stepson to "face the consequences" but remained uncertain about the teen's involvement. "I cannot say that he is responsible, but I cant decline," he stated, acknowledging the ongoing FBI investigation that must ultimately provide conclusive evidence.
Following the incident, the stepbrother was relocated to live with other relatives to prevent any potential danger to other children. Anna's ex-boyfriend revealed that she had previously confided in him about feeling unsafe around her stepbrother, a sentiment echoed by the boy's father, who described the teen as "infatuated" with Anna.
Anna Kepner was a devout Christian, having been baptized in May, and was on the cusp of graduating from Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida. She harbored aspirations of joining the US Navy and pursuing a career as a K-9 police officer. Her untimely death has left a void in the lives of those who knew her, as the investigation continues to unfold.
