A tragic incident in New York has once again highlighted the severe repercussions of America's ineffective border policies.
The brutal murder of a taxi driver, allegedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant, underscores the urgent need for reform.
According to Gateway Pundit, the suspect, Santos Paulino Vazquez-Ramirez, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, is accused of murdering Aurelio Zhunio-Orbez, a 56-year-old taxi driver originally from Ecuador, who had entered the United States legally.
Zhunio-Orbez's body was discovered in the Croton Falls Reservoir in Putnam County after a fisherman made the grim find. The victim had been reported missing on December 1 after failing to return to his taxi base, with the Brewster train station being one of his last known stops.
Investigators revealed that Vazquez-Ramirez allegedly strangled Zhunio-Orbez in a chokehold after being picked up at the Brewster Metro-North station. The fare dispute, which reportedly stemmed from a trip to Pawling typically costing around $40, may have been fueled by a previous altercation between the two men.
After the murder, Vazquez-Ramirez is said to have dragged the victim's body into nearby woods, disposed of it in the reservoir, and then abandoned the stolen cab near the Purdys train station.
Putnam County Sheriff Brian Hess confirmed that Vazquez-Ramirez confessed to the crime. The 27-year-old was apprehended after police tracked him through video surveillance to his residence in Pawling. He now faces charges of murder and robbery and is being held at the Putnam County Correctional Facility.
As reported by the New York Post, Vazquez-Ramirez illegally entered the United States in 2013 via the southern border in Hidalgo, Texas, during President Barack Obama's administration. Despite receiving a final order of removal in 2016, during President Trump's first term, he remained in the country unlawfully.
Assistant Secretary of DHS Tricia McLaughlin stated, "He shouldve never been in our country in the first place and provided the opportunity to gruesomely take the life of Aurelio Zhunio-Orbez." She further emphasized, "Open border policies have deadly consequences. ICE lodged a detainer with local authorities to ensure this criminal illegal alien is never allowed back into American neighborhoods. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, ICE is targeting the worst of the worst."
