During a segment on Fox News Channel's "America Reports," Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) addressed the notion of President Donald Trump potentially engaging in military action against Venezuela.
The discussion, led by host John Roberts, centered on the possibility of the President initiating a conflict or invasion in the South American nation. Roberts inquired, "About President Trump going to war in Venezuela, or at the very least, mounting some sort of an invasion. Do you think that that is in the cards?"
Senator Paul, known for his adherence to constitutional principles, responded with a firm stance on the matter. "You know, Im kind of old fashioned. I kind of like to obey this thing called the Constitution. The Constitution says that war only occurs when its declared by Congress. President doesnt have the power to take the country to war," he stated, as reported by Breitbart. This perspective underscores a commitment to the foundational document that governs the United States, emphasizing the necessity for congressional approval in matters of war.
Paul elaborated on his viewpoint, acknowledging that while previous presidents have bypassed constitutional mandates, it remains crucial to adhere to the established process.
"Now, if he does, he wouldnt be the first president to disobey the Constitution. But I think we should obey the Constitution the way it makes more or less likely that this would be a war of choice. It would be an offensive war, albeit a war to get rid of people we most, most of us find distasteful. But it would be unconstitutional for the president to do this alone," he continued.
The senator's remarks highlight the importance of maintaining checks and balances within the government, ensuring that any decision to engage in military conflict is thoroughly vetted and approved by Congress. Paul concluded by asserting, "So if he thinks he wants war with Venezuela, he should come and ask for permission from Congress the way it was intended."
