Rep. Eric Swalwell, often criticized for his political stance, found himself in a precarious situation on Monday after attempting to belittle FBI Director Kash Patel.
The incident unfolded when Swalwell, in a bid to question Patel's leadership, inadvertently became the subject of ridicule himself.
The controversy stemmed from a New York Post article by Miranda Devine, which painted Patel as an inexperienced leader at the helm of the FBI. The piece, citing anonymous FBI agents, criticized Patel for his "lack of experience," "insecurity," and a supposed "unfortunate obsession with social media."
The report also included disparaging remarks about FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino from both active-duty and retired agents. According to Gateway Pundit, one particular allegation that caught the attention of the left was Patel's purported request for an FBI raid jacket during his visit to Provo following the Charlie Kirk assassination. It was reported that a jacket belonging to a female special agent was found for him.
In response to the article, Swalwell took to social media to mock Patel, saying, "I dont mind that FBI Director Kash Patel had to wear a womens (size medium) jacket to cosplay as someone in charge. I just wish hed focus on stopping the rampant domestic terrorism happening on his watch." Patel, however, was quick to counter Swalwell's jibe with a sharp retort.
"I was looking for a Youth Large," Patel replied. "Domestic terrorism arrests are UP 30% this year impressive, considering I spent zero days dating a Chinese spy named Fang Fang." He further quipped, "Where should I send your womens medium for date night?"
The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between conservative and liberal figures, with Patel's response underscoring a focus on results rather than rhetoric. The increase in domestic terrorism arrests under Patel's leadership is a testament to his commitment to national security, despite the criticisms leveled against him. Meanwhile, Swalwell's attempt to undermine Patel backfired, drawing attention to his own political vulnerabilities.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of substance over style in political discourse, particularly when addressing matters of national security and leadership.
