Putin Pours Ice Water On Any Ukraine Peace Talk

As the world watches the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the prospect of peace seems to be hanging by a thread.

Despite the impending presentation of a revised 18-point peace plan by presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made it clear that no agreement is in sight. This announcement was made during the post-Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit press conference in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The CSTO, a Russia-led organization, was formed in the aftermath of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact's collapse, with members including Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan.

According to RedState, Putin used this platform to assure the media that Steve Witkoff, a US citizen, is a staunch patriot. "He is a US citizen, and he upholds the position of his President and his country," Putin said. He further emphasized Witkoff's commitment to his country, stating, "To reiterate, Mr. Witkoff is upholding his position, the position of the United States and the interests of the United States as he sees them and as those who delegate him to negotiate with Russia see them."

However, Putin's endorsement of Witkoff's loyalty does little to alleviate the tension surrounding the conflict. The Russian President's comments on the war were unsettling, as he boasted about the "successes" of occupying forces in a city that doesn't exist, demonstrating a disturbing detachment from reality.

Putin also dismissed a European condition that Russia promise not to attack Europe. "There are, unquestionably, areas where we need to sit down and engage in serious discussions on specific points, and all such matters must be framed in proper diplomatic language," Putin said. "Because, generally speaking, one thing is to say that Russia does not intend to attack Europe. To us, that sounds ridiculous, does it not? We never had any such intentions. But if they want to have it formalised, lets do it, no problem."

In a concerning turn of events, Putin made a vague statement about requiring Ukrainian forces to withdraw from positions they currently defend. This statement was not made in the context of Donbas but rather the entire front, raising questions about Putin's intentions and the future of the conflict.

Putin also laid out another requirement at the end of the press event, addressing the legal aspect concerning Crimea and Donbas. He stated that this is one of the issues that should be addressed in negotiations with the American side. This presents a significant problem to Europe and potentially the U.S., as recognizing the conquered area as part of Russia would be a blatant violation of the UN Charter.

The Russian President made it clear that Russia will not sign any agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He stated, "signing documents with the Ukrainian leadership is pointless. I have mentioned this many times." Putin believes that the Ukrainian leadership made a strategic mistake when it chose not to hold presidential elections, leading to the president losing his legitimacy.

Putin's refusal to deal with Zelensky and his insistence on new elections seem to be part of a strategy to reach a deal with Trump and have Trump force Ukraine to adhere to it. This strategy, however, is fraught with complications and potential pitfalls.

Putin's comments reveal a disturbing disregard for the principles of international law and the sovereignty of nations. His insistence on dictating the terms of peace negotiations and his refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the Ukrainian leadership underscore the challenges that lie ahead in resolving this conflict.

The peace process, as it stands, seems to be a farce. Peace cannot be achieved within the context of an independent Ukraine, a fact that Putin refuses to acknowledge. He continues to drag out the negotiations and increase his demands, seemingly confident that Trump will continue to play his game.

The future of Ukraine hangs in the balance as the world watches and waits for a resolution to this conflict. The path to peace is fraught with obstacles, and it remains to be seen whether the efforts of the international community will be enough to bring about a peaceful resolution.
