A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Hawaii as a 47-year-old naval officer lost his life while attempting to save two children from the perilous waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The Kauai Police Department confirmed the officer's death on Saturday, following his heroic act of bravery.
Master-at-Arms First Class Jeffrey Diaz, originally hailing from Florida, was stationed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands. He courageously plunged into the dangerous surf near Waiapuaa Bay on Kauai to rescue the children, who were struggling against the high waves. While the children managed to reach the shore safely, Diaz succumbed to the relentless power of the Hawaiian surf.
According to the Daily Caller, personnel from the Ocean Safety Bureau and Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services Department swiftly arrived at the scene. They retrieved Diaz from the ocean and initiated lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, Diaz was pronounced dead at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, as reported by the police.
Capt. Robert Prince, commanding officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. "We are heartbroken by the passing of our shipman and friend, MA1 First Class Jeffrey Diaz and extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and shipmen who are grieving," he stated, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
