An alleged Chinese spy has been arrested in Boston.
Litang Liang was his name, and he was a resident of Boston, Massachusetts. Now, he is in custody on charges of acting as an agent of a foreign government.
The U.S. District Court wrote the following in its indictment: Litang Liang knowingly acted and caused others to act in the United States as an agent of a foreign government, namely, the Peoples Republic of China, without providing prior notification to the United States Attorney General, as required by law,
Liang was accused of acting as a spy for the Peoples Republic of China beginning in 2018. The prosecutors, in this case, allege that Liang would pass along information about American citizens and the activities of those citizens back to the CCP in China.
He is also accused of organizing a counter-protest to U.S. pro-democracy dissidents and providing information about people involved in those protests to members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The court wrote the following in the indictment: Liang communicated with the PRC government officials knowing them to be PRC government officials in several ways, and These included telephone calls and messages using the social media application WeChat [...] All WeChat communications are stored on servers outside the United States.
In January 2019, Liang co-founded the New England Alliance for the Peaceful Unification of China. He has served as the Vice President of the pro-PRC, an anti-Taiwanese independence organization, since 2021.
Liang was allegedly tasked with discovering information about various American citizens and reporting back to China on those activities. He might have reported significant and sensitive data to the CCP. The country could be at risk if he had access to any sensitive information concerning national security.
