Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of California is leveraging his recent political triumph to rally support across the nation.
Fresh from his decisive victory in California's high-stakes congressional redistricting battle, Newsom is set to headline a rally in the traditionally Republican state of Texas this Saturday.
Newsom's recent success lies in the passage of Proposition 50, a ballot initiative he championed. This initiative temporarily suspends the nonpartisan redistricting commission in California, a state that leans Democratic, and reinstates the power to draw congressional maps to the Democrat-controlled legislature. As reported by Fox News, this move is anticipated to create five additional Democratic-leaning congressional districts in California. This is seen as a countermeasure to Texas' recent redistricting, which is expected to create up to five new Republican-leaning House seats.
"California stepped up. Now, we are taking this fight across the country helping Democrats in other states push back against Trumps election rigging," Newsom stated to Fox News Digital. His comment refers to the efforts by President Donald Trump and the Republican Party to secure their slim House majority through rare mid-decade redistricting. This strategy is being employed in states like Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio, with the aim of retaining control of the House in the 2026 midterms, a time when the ruling party typically faces political challenges and loses seats.
Newsom's victory in Proposition 50 is a significant win for the Democrats, preventing what could have been a major setback. Now, he is urging Democrats nationwide to follow suit. "We need to see other states, their remarkable leaders that have been doing remarkable things, meet this moment head-on as well," Newsom declared on Tuesday night, celebrating the passage of the ballot initiative. He further stated, "We can de facto end Donald Trumps presidency as we know it, the minute Speaker Jeffries gets sworn in as speaker of the House of Representatives. It is all on the line."
Newsom's next stop is Texas, where he is scheduled to rally with Texas Democrats at a Houston event. His proactive stance in the redistricting wars has set him apart from other Democratic governors, such as JB Pritzker of Illinois and Wes Moore of Maryland, who are also considering redistricting to create more Democrat-leaning districts in their states.
Newsom's successful campaign for Proposition 50 has further solidified his reputation as a formidable opponent to Trump. This could potentially benefit him in the anticipated competitive race for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination. "He put a lot of effort into this, and it was not a sure thing when it first started," veteran Democratic strategist Maria Cardona told Fox News Digital. "He galvanized and mobilized California voters."
Cardona, a member of the Democratic National Committee, believes that Newsom's recent success has not only strengthened his position as an anti-Trump figure but also placed him as a leading contender for the 2028 Democratic nomination. As Newsom continues his nationwide campaign, his actions will undoubtedly shape the political landscape in the lead-up to the 2028 presidential race.
