Dave Portnoy, the head of Barstool Sports, has expressed immense relief over his decision to leave New York City following the election of Zohran Mamdani, a candidate with socialist and Islamist leanings, as the city's new mayor.
Portnoy's sentiments reflect a broader concern among conservatives about the direction in which New York City is heading under Mamdani's leadership.
According to Breitbart, Portnoy had already initiated plans to distance his company from the city, instructing his finance department to explore property options elsewhere. "Honestly, Ive given that a lot of thought going to Hoboken or Jersey City or something. I dont want to fucking have an office (in New York)," Portnoy remarked, underscoring his determination to relocate.
His personal departure from New York is also a source of relief. "If this is what the people of NYC want, then so be it. Thank God I dont live there anymore," he declared on X, following Mamdani's decisive victory.
Portnoy, who relocated to a $27.75 million estate in the Florida Keys in 2021, had previously considered moving his company out of New York even before the election results. His criticism of Mamdani is sharp, labeling the new mayor as a "communist" and "one of the worst, scariest candidates."
Portnoy, who is Jewish, voiced his concerns on Fox Business Network in July, stating, "He hates capitalism, he wants a fundamental shift in what has built this country, and he doesnt really particularly hide it."
Portnoy's apprehensions about Mamdani's policies resonate with those who advocate for traditional American values and free-market principles. His decision to leave New York City highlights the growing divide between conservative and progressive ideologies in urban centers.
