The ongoing Schumer Shutdown, now in its second month, has left many government workers unpaid, SNAP benefits depleted, and Democrats refusing to negotiate unless Republicans consent to trillions in spending.
This situation was the focal point of a recent discussion on Fox Business' Sunday Morning Futures, where White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, known for her straightforward approach, laid out the current state of affairs.
According to RedState, Leavitt began by addressing the ongoing shutdown, stating, "Radical Left Democrats have shut our government down and held the American people hostage for 32 days in a row. We have air traffic controller shortages all over this country... half a million federal workers who are going unpaid. SNAP benefits have expired."
She further elaborated on the situation, attributing the shutdown to the radical left Democrats and the hardships it has caused, including air traffic controller shortages, severe delays in major airports, and unpaid federal workers.
Leavitt continued, "Only because of President Trump finding a legal maneuver are our troops continuing to be getting paid. If it were up to the Democrats, our military and our law enforcement would not be receiving their paychecks, like the rest of the federal government workforce."
She criticized the Democrats for their lack of willingness to reopen the government and their preference for providing taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal aliens. She emphasized President Trump's call for Republicans to get tough and smart, and to consider eliminating the filibuster to reopen the government.
However, the elimination of the filibuster, which has already been eroded in matters like judicial appointments, carries its own risks. It could potentially lead to the government being run by continuing resolution for extended periods, without any pressing requirement for an actual budget. Moreover, the potential for Democrats to regain the majority in the future raises concerns about what they might do with a simple majority, given their expressed desire to eliminate the filibuster entirely.
Leavitt further stated, "Republicans and President Trump want to reopen the government and then we can discuss tackling these very important issues before us. How can we fix our healthcare system? There is no one more committed to answering and solving that question than President Donald Trump."
She expressed hope for the government to reopen soon and criticized Democrats for holding the government hostage while trying to renegotiate the healthcare system they created. She also highlighted President Trump's commitment to solving these issues, but not at the expense of holding the federal government and the country hostage.
The crux of the matter is that the GOP is steadfastly maintaining its stance on the continuing resolution. As of now, there has been no public discussion of any alternative course of action. The GOP's position is clear: pass the continuing resolution, reopen the government, and then engage in discussions. This is the only acceptable resolution, and it's time for House and Senate Republicans, along with the Trump administration, to stand firm and hold their ground.
