Tom Fletcher, a high-ranking official of the United Nations, who has been vocal about his disdain for President Donald Trump on his personal social media account, is now vying for a significant role in the implementation of Trump's peace plan for Gaza.
Fletcher, who serves as the undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator in Gaza, has previously called for foreign leaders to boycott Trump and declared that the world is grappling with "a Trump problem," among other derogatory remarks. These statements were found in over two dozen social media posts that were examined by The Washington Free Beacon.
In recent times, Fletcher has been working tirelessly to portray himself as a crucial figure in the humanitarian aid segment of Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which is backed by the U.S. and Israel and has been providing aid since spring until the recent ceasefire, is prepared to continue its role.
However, Fletcher is making efforts to rehabilitate the image of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which has ties to Hamas, and ensure its significant involvement in Gaza post-war.
According to insiders at the White House who spoke to The Washington Free Beacon, the British-born U.N. official has been arguing to the Trump administration that UNRWA is the only organization capable of managing aid in Gaza. This is despite the fact that numerous employees of the agency were involved in the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas and continue to be associated with the terrorist group.
"Fletcher is waging a charm offensive on Trump officials trying to reboot himself from pro-Hamas propagandist to reliable U.S. partner for humanitarian aid in Gaza," said a source who wished to remain anonymous while discussing the ongoing talks. "The British accent covers up a pernicious agenda."
Fletcher has repeatedly accused Israel of war crimes during its two-year war in Gaza. He has claimed in several interviews that the Jewish state subjected Gazan civilians to "forced starvation," a charge that has also been propagated by Hamas and its media allies.
Earlier this year, Fletcher echoed false allegations that over 14,000 Gazan infants would perish within 48 hours if Israel did not increase aid deliveries in Gaza, a statement he later retracted. However, as recently as August, Fletcher was still promoting inaccurate claims that Israel deliberately caused a famine in Gaza.
Despite his history of anti-Trump sentiments, Fletcher is now attempting to position himself as a Trump ally and confidant who can assist in enforcing the White House's 20-point peace plan in Gaza. However, additional social media posts reveal that he has spent years opposing what he refers to as the president's "extremist" agenda.
For instance, in January 2024, Fletcher suggested that a Trump victory in that year's presidential election would equate to victories for Russian president Vladimir Putin and Chinese president Xi Jinping. He further stated that during his first term, Trump "replaced shining city on hill with tacky gold tower."
Fletcher's anti-Trump sentiments have been a consistent feature on his social media for years. After the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump towards the end of his first term, Fletcher proposed a draft of the statement he believed then-U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson should have issued.
Richard Goldberg, a former senior national security official in both Trump administrations and current director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies international organizations program, warned The Washington Free Beacon that Fletcher's involvement could jeopardize the U.S. peace plan.
"This self-aggrandizing, raging anti-Trump leftist U.N. leader will be the downfall of the Trump plan for Gaza if hes allowed inside the decision-making tent," Goldberg cautioned. "Mark my words."
