In a recent interview on CNN's "AC360," New York City mayoral candidate Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D) articulated his stance on the role of the NYPD in civil immigration enforcement.
Mamdani emphasized his opposition to the NYPD's cooperation with federal agencies on such matters, asserting that city law permits coordination only for specific serious crimes. "That is something for the NYPD to focus on purely right here in New York City," he stated, underscoring his commitment to maintaining the city's sanctuary policies.
As reported by Breitbart, the discussion with host Anderson Cooper delved into the implications of recent ICE actions targeting illegal immigrants involved in selling counterfeit goods on Canal Street. Cooper inquired about Mamdani's approach to such federal interventions.
Mamdani responded by criticizing the current administration's policies, stating, "I think this is an example of what is unacceptable in this country." He further elaborated on his plan to reverse the NYPD's involvement in civil immigration enforcement, a move he attributes to Mayor Eric Adams' policies.
Cooper pressed Mamdani on whether he would permit any cooperation between the NYPD and federal agencies like ICE or DHS. Mamdani firmly replied, "Not in civil immigration enforcement. We have sanctuary city laws where weve made very, very clear that, for a set of serious crimes, there is coordination with the federal administration."
He reiterated that beyond the 172 crimes listed for coordination, the NYPD's focus should remain on local issues. This stance reflects a broader debate on the balance between local governance and federal immigration policies, a topic that continues to resonate in conservative circles advocating for limited government intervention.
