In a speech marked by apprehension, President Joe Biden on Sunday night described the current era under President Donald Trump as "dark days," urging Americans to "get back up" and align themselves with late-night television hosts, whom he lauded as courageous defenders of free speech.
"Since its founding, America served as a beacon for the most powerful idea ever in government in the history of the world," Biden declared. "The idea is stronger than any army. Were more powerful than any dictator."
As reported by the Associated Press, Biden, aged 82, made his first public appearance following a round of radiation therapy for an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Addressing an audience in Boston, he issued grave warnings after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute.
According to Breitbart, Biden emphasized the importance of a presidency with limited power, a functioning Congress, and an independent judiciary, particularly as the federal government faces its second-longest shutdown on record. He accused Trump of exploiting funding lapses to exert unprecedented control over the government.
Biden's rhetoric took a sharp turn as he directed his message of fear and criticism squarely at Trump and his administration, while expressing admiration for late-night hosts. "Friends, I cant sugar coat any of this. These are dark days," he stated, before expressing hope that the nation would "find our true compass again" and "emerge as we always have stronger, wiser and more resilient, more just, so long as we keep the faith."
He urged Americans to view comedians and late-night hosts as paragons of free speech, worthy of support and embrace, even as they face dwindling audiences and diminishing relevance. This decline, he suggested, is a consequence of their opposition to the democratically elected Trump. "The late night hosts continue to shine a light on free speech knowing their careers are on the line," Biden remarked.
Concluding his address, Biden implored the public to "get back up," reinforcing his call for resilience and unity in the face of perceived challenges to American democracy.
